I would sure not rely on the number of tool changes to assess the condition of the draw bar. This machine is only 10HP and mostly runs small cutters. If I stuck a big cutter it, it would probably drop a tool and kill the spindle.

The lowest drawbar force that Haas used was 900lbs. My 1993 has a 1300lb drawbar, which is the biggest they used in the "little head" machines. They have round and square pistons, mine is the 7 inch square, I think the 1500lb drawbar is a 9 inch square piston.

Now on the Mini Mill running at 80% feed (to compensate for the lack of 2000 rpm) the finish is unacceptable. It isn't chatter. It happens in XY as well as Z. For lack of a better way to describe it. The machine seems to be shuddering for a short distance after a direction change. Like it has to step left and right to find the correct direction.

Followed your advice and used my bridgeport to press down on the draw bar and was able to crack the brass insert loose. Lowered and raised the knee to depress the draw bar. Draw bar is in excellent condition. Anyone attempting this needs to be careful the 5 ball bearings that hold the pull stud don't fall out.

If I was looking for a budget machine I would not hesitate on a haas mini mill or tool room mil machine. The tm-0 is pretty cheap from haas and a small footprint. As stated above a good dealer will be a benefit for repairs or just application's help.
